  • If you didn't know... Now you do

Chick... You're the greatest Laker fan in the world.

If you are a true Laker fan, you should know who Chick Hearn is. I grew up listening to him and his voice has to be the most recognizable voices in sports announcing history! He had a streak of calling 3,338 consecutive Lakers games, between 1965 and 2001; his 3000th consecutive game was Jan 19, 1998. On April 21,2010 Staples Center unveiled a 16 ft statue of Chick. His wife, Marge, is pictured next to him sitting on the announcing booth. The iconic phrase "yo-yo-ing up & down" has been stuck in my head since I was in grade school. I remember asking my dad why Chick always said that over the radio (cuz a lot of the time my dad would be listening to the game in the car- hence the reason why I'm addicted to sports radio on long drives) but now I find myself chanting that phrase in my head every time I see Kobe or Fisher think about their next move. It would have been an honor to meet the guy before his death. You can visit this website for more of Chick-isms :)

What the heck are antioxidants? You're on a gluten free diet?

OK, we're all heard that antioxidants help prevent blah blah and BLAH.. But do you really know what they are??? Wikipedia says, "An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reactionthat transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells. Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates, and inhibit other oxidation reactions by being oxidized themselves. As a result, antioxidants are often reducing agents such as thiols, ascorbic acid or polyphenols.[1]"

Are you still confused, because I sure am! In a nut shell, antioxidants are ingredients used in dietary suppliments and actually has been proven to reduce the risk of cancers and heart disease. They serve as a cell protector from free radicals (tiny molecules that help your body break down food) that are potentially harmful to your body. The most common antioxidants are:

Gluten is the gummy substance in the dough of your bread and affects the texture of baked goods. What some of you may not know is that gluten also serves as a stabilizing agent in products such as ice cream and ketchup (again, you have to think about textures, etc etc...) Here are some articles I found just to tickle your fancy about the gluten free diet:
