PUT SOME MEXICAN IN YOU!
Mama Testa's- Hillcrest
Bobby Flay came to SD for a Throw Down with the owner... It also helps that they have a really catchy radio commercial that my gal Lety likes to sing. Anyhow, I'm not a fan of corn tortillas, but Mama T's convinced me that there is a whole lot of yummy goodness packed in that small round thing. I especially love their tortilla chips and pickled carrots (They refilled my basket multiple times). It's really heaven sent in my mouth!!!
Saffron Thai
Mission Hills
Saffron is more known for it's chicken then anything else. Oh, and it also helps to know that the owner is famous as well! Originally from Bangkok, Su-Mei Lu wanted to design a menu based around the mind, body, and soul. Saffron has been awarded the prestigious "Silver Fork" Award from San Diego Home & Garden and also won "The Best Of" awards from both Zagat and USA Today. Thursday nights are Vegetarian nights, and there are daily specials depending on what you're in the mood for.
Gio
Downtown La Mesa
This is the only hip wine bar I know of in La Mesa... And probably the only decent place to eat in the area (sorry for sounding like a food snob, but it's partially true!) I have been to Gio for breakfast, lunch, and happy hour and I have enjoyed myself everytime I've gone in. Let me give you a tip though..... The sangria is a on the light side, so if you want something stronger, skip the sangria and order a wine instead! The happy hour appetizers are small portions, so don't come hungry unless you want to fork out a heafty bill! I have no complaints regarding their breakfasts however.
Manna Korean BBQ
West Los Angeles
I went here with my family two weeks ago... Holly crap, I think I ate enough to feed two small families in Somalia (not kidding). They have an all-you-can eat dinner for $15.99/person (I think) and it's crazy good. You can huge portions of meat, small bites of potato salad, kimchi, thin rice cakes, assorted pickled veggies, and uuuummmmm salad. If it's your birthday they open a whole bottle of champagne on top of the birthday victim. If you're wondering why the floors are so sticky, it's because of the champagne.
Armando's Mexican Restaurant
Monterey Park
ARRRR-MON-DO'S!!!! (This is how my dad like's to say the name of this joint)
This place is a couple blocks away from my parent's house in East L.A. My dad is almost a regular there and for good reason... The food is really good! I always order the carne asada, but they have a variety of stuff to choose from at reasonable prices. Come hungry for sure bc the portions are huge. The weight staff is hospitable and the food comes out piping hot and fresh. Order a Michelada or "cerveza preparada" and you'll complete your meal indefinably.
